What a Treat
Spa Golf Club in Ballynahinch, County Down just blew me away, from the welcome to the course itself, everything was 5*
So the 2nd ever Course Review for the website took me to Spa Golf Club which will play host to the inaugural NI Creator Classic which is a fantastic event being organised by a group of TikTok Creators and to be honest the sheer volume of videos circling on Social Media pricked my interest to get along and see just how good this place is.
Everything about Spa is on a big scale, huge big clubhouse, great facilities which includes a grass practice range and the course is not short by any means stretching to just over 6500 yards from the back tees, I can confirm its a big walk! Not overly hilly but by no means flat this course undulates beautifully and there are some really cracking holes, particularly on the front 9 which will certainly get your attention.
A par 5, par 3 start is probably unusual but they are two incredible holes. The first is a proper par 5 but if you get a good one off the tee it will have you reaching for a wood to have a cut at it.
The 2nd is just a gorgeous par 3, just 167 yards from the back tee which as you will realise in my reviews this is the 'fun zone' yardage wise, nobody wants to be hitting woods into par 3's!
The entire course is pretty much tree lined but on a few holes like, the 4th and the 10th there is an opportunity for the big hitters to flex their muscles and go 'over' such obstacles and try to get onto or near the green which is always fun!
Time for full disclosure and a wood was maybe needed on one of the par 3's when I played with the 181 yard 17th playing into a big old breeze the big slope at the front gobbled up both mine and my playing partners balls and ended up being a complete card wrecker!!
Visually, the end to both nines is just stunning. Both the 9th and 18th tee off from similar spots back towards the clubhouse, playing from a high position into a valley before rising up to the magnificent clubhouse. A fine way to close out both 9's.
The variety of the holes I found was this courses strength, you never felt you were just playing back and forth which a lot of courses are guilty of. From the 137 yard 8th (which I thought I had aced for it to be a disappointing 15 feet short!!) to the gorgeous corner of the course from the 11th tee round to the 13th there is plenty to feast your eyes on and enjoy.
Get this course booked for you next round, I promise you it won't disappoint!!
